David Ireland House: Spring Break Intensive

Students engaged the work of local internationally known artist, David Ireland, through his house at 500 Capp Street and the eyes of contemporary artists engaging with his groundbreaking work. This weeklong Spring Break intensive workshop introduced youth to the Conceptual art movement of the 70s and encouraged making individual work influenced by the work of David Ireland and how his work resonates today. Youth also worked with the artists-in-residence, Megan Lowe and Johnny Huy Nguyen, to create collaborative pieces and more around the corner at the Mission Art Center. This workshop focused on how artists discover creativity within both their communities as well as themselves. This program was a collaboration between SFRPD and SFAI.

ARTIVATE: My Oakland Agenda

Oakland Lowdown collaborated with Artivate students to create a series of silk-screened posters and individual artists books responding to the 2022 midterm elections and their own individual “Oakland Agenda” they are passionate about. “My Oakland Agenda” explored creative exploration and outcomes examining the Artivate students’ most pressing issues and policies they want to see addressed with the midterm election and beyond. Students collaborated with the residents at the hotel and Lifelong Medical, listening to the resident stories and their own “Oakland Agenda.” From these conversations students created a series of posters illustrating and highlighting their conversations. Students also collaborated with artist Victoria Heilweil to create an individual artist chap-book focusing on downtown Oakland, examining the pulse and character of the neighborhood.
