Feminism NOW!

Students created work around ideas of feminism and other activist ideologies, exploring how they continue to have power in our #MeToo environment both in the studio and out in public. The class explored the lives of the elder activists who live next door to the Haight Street studio in elder housing. Also in this program were prints responding to Indigenous Peoples’ Day under the direction of artist and activist Rye Purvis and pieces reflecting on the life and passing of renowned local artist and teacher Hung Liu, featured at the October Joy on Joice event at the Chinese Historical Society of America.

Harrison Hotel Project

Students interviewed current and former residents of the Harrison Hotel in Oakland and created collaborative murals and screen prints that expressed the stories they shared.

Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center

Students created a large collaborative mural at the neighborhood center and took a field trip to the San Francisco Art Institute to get inspiration from the Diego Rivera Mural.

Columbia Park Boys and Girls Club

Students worked to create cement “dumbballs” and an “exquisite corpse” drawing and also took a field trip to the magical David Ireland House.

Capp Street Foundation and the David Ireland House

Students visit and learn about the work of David Ireland and engage in several art projects inspired by the artist.
